Arrow Art

White bread, bechamel sauce, vanilla ice cream and sleet. How much freedom is "freedom"? Options increase and necessities are reevaluated. When our daily bread, pure water, clothing and health are attainable facts, we dream of something that will set us free from the rest. Las Vegas, Regis Lee, Nasdaq or LSD? Dreaming of the great cash-in and intoxication is, paradoxically, the only thing to liberate us from the chains of being able to feel. Art reflects upon reality which reproduces art which depicts life which initiates art which could be described as an enterprise whose intentions are to provoke an empathic emotional or cognitive impression. The art is asleep; and will not wake up until the viewer regards it as an incitement for her ruminations.

Made in Jail. Educational project at the Kirsebergs penitentiary in Malmö

In the winter of 2010 prison officers called me from the Kirseberg penitentiary Institution and told me that there was a group of inmates who were under-stimulated by playing cards and pumping iron. He asked me if I wanted to do an art project with them. During that spring I designed a course where I boiled down my art school education to ten Friday afternoons. The inmates were taught art history, theory and did some practical exercises. The focus was public sculpture. At the tenth session the inmates made a presentation for the Culture Department in Malmö, where they showed their models and proposals on public commissions in Malmö. The proposals are now being treated for possible implementation.

After the sculpture project, the inmates told me they wanted to learn how to draw. As realistic as possible. Since autumn 2010, we have discussed art and done exercises with negative space, perspective, angles, relationships and getting that all together . One after one they discover that they can
draw.

Arrow Ida & Emil 2009

In an episode in Astrid Lindgrens story about "Emil in Lönneberga" Emil raised his sister Ida in a flagpole to show her the world. Now, a hundred years later, I would like to change their roles. The modern Ida is a product or education, feminism and girl power. It's her turn to show Emil the world. The sculpture is placed in Rosengård, an immigrant dense part of Malmö.

Material: Bronze and granite

Arrow Agnes & Elin 1999

Wall at Eriksberg junior high in Uppsala .
A picture of the two heroines from the youth film "Fucking Åmål/Show me love" were made into tiles. If you stand too close to the image it appears quite abstract. Only with some distance the picture appears. This is perhaps a metaphor for many students' experience of school?

The viewer who stands long enough near the fountain will feel dizzy after a while. The longer you stand there the dizzier you get . Dedicated to viewers and critics who complain that contemporary art is not intoxicating enough nowadays.

Hemp plants have, through history, been a symbol of manifacture products, flower power and now recently "the road to heroine". The exhibition was a historical view on Cannabis sativa and how it has affected us.

Arrow Was it a car or a cat i saw 2001

Palindrome in neon
The french philosopher Henri Bergsson (1859-1941) said, ”if we didn’t have a brain we would remember everything, but now we only remember things we find interesting.?/p>

Our perception is selective. In a world, which accelerates, we receive an overwhelming amount of information. We are bombed with pictures and impressions and forced to choose. What we become aware of is determined by our cultural belonging, by a wish for consequences and laws of configuration. We make decisions from the amount of information that we receive, but the focus for our attention span gets smaller, decisions quicker and the Renaissance man becomes only a memory. Freedom of choice is not an easy trail to walk on. Sometimes it leads to involvement, sometimes indifference. Many quick decisions lead to simplification and sometimes even extremism. Polarization becomes a short cut with no demand for more time and shade of nuances. What consequences will this have on our ethics? To question is a necessity. A cat or a car. A palindrome extends the questioning in a playful way.

To what extent can we trust our perception? We can at least agree that we don’t share it with other people, since there are as many viewpoints and apprehensions as there are people. Is everything what it seems to be? Think again ?Was it a car or a cat I saw?

Knowing how to read and understand the meaning of words is a necessity in order to understand a language. We have learnt a form of structure for a text. A palindrome revises this conception since you also can read it backwards.

Hemp plant, lamp
A small hemp plant was lit in a way that it created a huge "frightening" shadow on the wall. As an artist you sometimes scream louder than your voice can carry.

There is no business like art business either...
If you want to get somewhere in the artworld you'd better be a magician, hanging out all you got!
I wanted to use my showbiss picture as a fake ad in an art magazine. The idea was of course rejected by the art museum, the principal at my art school and a lawyer.

Ink drawings
Detailed drawings from photos from the exterior in Upsala. All details have been drawn with the same value. Nothing of what we as an audience normally spend more time in studying (facial expressions, hands) have been dealt with more than anything else. Just like drawings made by an autistic person.

ArrowRosengård - NEVER ODD OR EVEN 2009

blank Palindrome:a word, verse, or sentence (as “Dennis sinned?/span>) or a number (as 1881) that reads the same backward or forward.

Every Swedish town has a slogan. Malmö for example: "Possibilities, Meetings and multiplicity" or "Malmö - City of the parks" . Karlskrona has "With wind in the sails" and my favorite: "Vallentuna - Every fifth citizen is a horse" ...

I thought it was about time that the eastern part of Malmö; Rosengård had its own slogan. Originally I suggested "Rosengård - A part of the world" since Rosengård IS a part of the world and a part from every country in the world lives there, but the contractor MKB liked my palindrome better. I hope the citizens of Rosengård will like my slogan and that everyone outside of Rosengård sometimes will let odd be even ...

A removed manager later the finnished piece now is a quote by Zlatan. Never wrong to let Zlatan finnish the game, I guess ...

Originally NEVER ODD OR EVEN was a public art suggestion for the new state owned casino in town. Usually one can see signs there with warnings like "Gamble carefully" or "Never gamble with more money than you can afford to lose". My warning sign indicates that the odds are always on the casinos side. The piece was rejected.
